ZooCREW

What: a 3 year program that inspires and guides teens, primarily from lower-income households, in conservation action that directly helps an endangered animal species. ZooCREW 1 members provide interpretation and support for the Zoo’s Conservation & Education Department during a volunteer summer. During all activities, ZooCREW 1 members share the Zoo’s message about conservation and directly engage guests in activities that teach them that simple changes in their everyday Lives help save wildlife around the world. ZooCREW 1 teens have amazing experiences and make life-long memories while also developing their career and professional skills.


ZooCREW 1 is a required introductory step for students interested in joining the zoo’s immersive year-long teen engagement program, ZooCREW 2. In ZooCREW 2, students can rise through levels of responsibility within the Zoo based on performance. Members of ZooCREW 2 participate for a period of 3 years. Teens who advance to ZooCREW 2 will become Zoo conservation ambassadors, gain experience working with animals, go on immersive field trips locally and internationally, meet and interact with zookeepers and learn how they and others can take action to help preserve wildlife through conservation.

Schuylkill Acts and Impacts

What: this expedition will involve a physical journey (by kayak and van) along the 120-mile Schuylkill River from its headwaters in the anthracite coal lands of Schuylkill County to its confluence with the Delaware River in Philadelphia, illustrating an array of issues impacting water quality in the Schuylkill River through guided tours, programming, and applied service work designed to highlight issues in the watershed and explore hands-on solutions to these problems.

What: iCamp is a free media academy held at West Chester University that invites high school juniors and rising seniors from the Philadelphia School District to make media that matters. What: a four-week, college-level art-making experience for talented and motivated high school students at the nation's first and premier school of fine art. Enjoy rigorous courses in drawing, painting, sculpture, and printmaking taught by PAFA's exceptional faculty of practicing artists.

Summer Academy participants have the opportunity to:

What: Environmental Design Institute: explore careers within landscape architecture and horticulture in this hands-on program that incorporates science, design and sustainability. Portfolio Boot Camp at Temple

What: Are you planning on applying to an art school? Designed as intensive portfolio preparation classes, these workshops are open to 11th and 12th-grade students with previous high school drawing experience. Learning about the qualities of a well-rounded college admission portfolio, students leave class with finished pieces that will distinguish them as exceptional artists. Classes meet for 6 hours, allowing students the luxury of uninterrupted studio time during which they can completely immerse themselves in their work.  Students can choose to attend Summer Boot Camps, held Monday through Friday for two weeks, or Weekend Boot Camps, held for three consecutive Saturdays during the school year. What: a six-day intensive, multicultural journalism training program for high school students. Philadelphia Music Alliance for Youth

What: a project that supports 5th-12th grade students from underrepresented communities and low-income households to pursue their dream of becoming a professional classical musician. The PMAY Artists’ Initiative offers young musicians financial support to make lessons, music classes, youth orchestra participation, and summer music camps affordable. As a PMAY artist, students attend free college and career preparation workshops, and PMAY teachers and staff work with each family to ensure that each musician has an instrument and a strong plan in place for acceptance into a conservatory, college or university majoring in classical music.

Bloomberg Arts Internship

What: During this seven-week paid internship, participants will work at Philadelphia’s leading arts organizations, attend rigorous professional development workshops and tour our region’s most important cultural sites. This is an amazing opportunity to develop vital professional skills while exploring Philadelphia’s rich arts and culture community. Mondays through Wednesdays, interns are active participants in the running of their organizations, supporting both the day-to-day operations of a nonprofit, as well as executing on a capstone project. In the past, interns have created and led tours, produced original videos, and  helped develop major exhibitions. On Thursdays, interns visit iconic cultural sites across the city, hearing directly from leaders in the sector and getting a behind-the-scenes look at what makes a world-class arts and culture institution tick. Finally, on Fridays, interns come together for challenging and engaging professional development and college readiness workshops, where they’ll develop vital skills to carry them forward in their educational and professional lives.

Shark Tank Business Camp with Harrisburg University (Philadelphia Campus)

What: Attendees of this camp, Aspiring Entrepreneurs, will pitch a promotional idea to a panel of mock investors, much like the TV show “Shark Tank”, but without the real money. This camp will be 5 days in length: Day 1) Develop an idea, Day 2) Create a storyboard for a pitch, Day 3) Plan the sales pitch, Day 4) Shoot the 3-minute video, Day 5) Make your pitch! The panel will award investments to the most inspiring videos. Coaching, video equipment, and other resources will be available to attendees . The camp is intended to enhance communication skills, planning skills, and understanding of marketing and sales , as well as provide hands-on experience needed for starting a new private business.

What: Camp Business, sponsored by Drexel University’s LeBow College of Business, is an enriching summer program designed to give rising high school juniors and seniors an intensive introduction to both collegiate and corporate business education — and it shows them that business can be both fun and exciting. Camp Business participants learn the basics of major business disciplines including accounting, marketing, finance and management, as well as the core concepts of business including leadership, professional image, etiquette, team building, and strategy. Students also learn about resources essential to business such as the stock market, financial documents, and technology.

LEAD (Leadership, Education and Development) Summer Business Institute at Lehigh University and University of Pennsylvania

What: SBI program exposes scholars to business principles and the skill sets needed for successful business careers. The program challenges them through applied learning experiences often facilitated by college professors, links scholars to corporate executives in business fields and peers with similar aspirations and abilities. During LEAD SBIs, scholars reside and attend classes on-campus at a select number of the nation’s top business schools for three or four weeks. SBIs provide diverse, high-achieving rising high school seniors the opportunity to explore finance, entrepreneurship, accounting and marketing, among other business sectors. The goal of the SBI is to expose scholars early in their academic development to the innumerable career opportunities in business. The program equips them with knowledge and expertise from our nation’s leading universities and corporations, empowering LEAD scholars to confidently make better informed decisions when choosing their university and career. The objectives of a LEAD Summer Business Institute are to:

  • Engage scholars in an intense, hands-on curriculum incorporating case studies, business plans and team projects

  • Provide scholars with first-hand knowledge from business professionals through mentoring and corporate site visits

Meet Kelly Business Program at Indiana University

What: a unique pre-college summer program for high-ability students to get introduced to the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, learn the opportunities available, experience a professional business case competition, and ultimately consider transitioning to Kelley after high school. During this program you will attend classes taught by Kelley faculty, team with other students in a competition to create and present the best business plan, make connections with new friends and Kelley staff and students, experience life at IU’s Bloomington campus and learn about IU admissions and scholarships.

Who: 11th graders from historically underrepresented groups, namely students who identify as African-American, Latino/Hispanic, American Indian/Native American, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, or multiracial with a minimum GPA of 3.4.

Penn State Abington’s Personal Finance Camp

What: this camp will prepare today’s teenagers for the financial twists and turns of growing up in the 21st century.  This program will focus on the mathematics that adults are faced with on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. Campers will be introduced to career planning, personal budgeting, basic banking, how credit works, school loans, auto payments & auto insurance, and "adulting." Throughout the week, campers will have the opportunity to apply these skills through a variety of different platforms, including computer-based projects, “escape rooms,” use of Microsoft Excel, and “real world” application projects.

Participants will make up an "imaginary" management team where they will learn first-hand about the Free Enterprise System. Their task - turn their failing company into a financial success! They will develop their own marketing strategies, design a website and in essence, make all of the decisions that are demanded of real life company executives. Project Home Summer Learning Experience

What: Project HOME offers rising 10th to 12th grade students a summer service opportunity focused on learning about issues of poverty and homelessness, building relationships with others involved in social change, getting to know persons who have experienced poverty and homelessness, and engaging in service with Project HOME and other agencies fighting poverty, hunger and homelessness in Philadelphia. This experience is designed to deepen students’ desire to be of service, understanding of Project HOME’s mission, insight on the issues of poverty and homelessness and the systems that impact these issues, experience of diversity, and connections with other teens interested in serving their community.

Penn State Abington Intro to Psychology Camp

What: those with an interest in psychological science will be introduced to the science of the mind and behavior. The program includes numerous experiential activities that complement the curriculum of a typical high school psychology course. Camp Objectives include: to introduce students to the themes of psychology that might be found in a high school or college introductory course, teach students how the scientific method is used in behavioral science, to expose students to various psychological phenomena while providing the theoretical rationale for each. What: In the Raspberry Pi Camp, students will engage in computer science topics utilizing the power of programming. How Quantum Computing Will Change the World with Harrisburg University (Philadelphia Campus)

What: Students will explore quantum computers and how they will change the way that science and business answers hard questions in the future.  This course covers how quantum dynamics changes information technology, and what the impact of quantum technology is on computing principles and algorithms.   This course does not require mathematics beyond an introduction to Algebra and variables (X, Y, etc.).  The course includes hands-on labs, with actual quantum computers and advanced simulators, to run quantum programs, computer applications, and complex simulations.  Yes, we will cover quantum teleportation! Penn State Abington’s Intro to Computer Vision and Machine Learning Camp

What: Machine learning is an exciting field that has evolved from artificial intelligence.  It is currently being applied in various applications and pioneering major breakthroughs in recent years including self-driving cars, smartphones, facial recognition, spam filtering, smart web search, cloud computing, and genetic analysis. Penn State Abington’s Smart Machines camp is a two-week, full-day summer program to introduce high school students to the science, techniques, and logic that drive the fields of machine learning. The objective of this program is two-fold: first objective is to provide an introduction to the background of computer vision, machine learning methods and principles. The second objective is to provide the students with hands-on experience of machine learning and an exposure to real-world applications. This program provides hands on experience in domains including facial detection, facial recognition, Optical Character Recognition (OCR), knowledge extraction, and other contemporary applications. Some programming knowledge, particularly of Python, is preferred.

Einstein Healthcare Network Career Exploration 

What: in this 3-week summer program, students have the ability to shadow healthcare professionals in several clinical areas. Some areas are Radiology, NICU, Labor & Delivery, Emergency Room, Pharmacy, Respiratory Therapy, OT, PT, and Speech Therapy. Students also spend time in the Simulation Lab and observe in surgery. Students have Health Education workshops on various topics, that include Accident Prevention, Gift of Life-Organ Donation and many more. The DHI participants are required to do a short research project on a topic or department of their choosing. They also help students prepare their resumes, prepare for job interviews and guide them on career choices. DHI fosters relationship building amongst its participants, many of whom remain connected all year round.

Wistar Institute Summer Fellowship Program in Biomedical Research 

What: Wistar’s High School Fellowship in Biomedical Research provides an opportunity for students to enhance their understanding of current biological/biomedical theory and research tools and techniques at a nationally recognized nonprofit research institution.  Wistar scientists and their laboratory teams serve as program mentors guiding students through the planning and practice of daily research experiments and activities.  Students learn research skills together, taught by a team of mentors, and individually as each student trains in a principal investigator’s laboratory for the duration of the program; under the direction of the laboratory head, the student is assigned a unique research project related to the research goals of that particular laboratory.  Students are integrated into the daily work of the laboratory, participating in laboratory meetings and gaining exposure to different facets of the laboratory's research.  Mentors help students apply their current knowledge and skills and assist them in making the connection between laboratory experience and their academic studies.  The program includes a weekly lunchtime seminar series presented by Institute scientists and an introduction to research library skills development.

Forensic Sciences Mentoring Institute Summer Science Program

What: high school students spend 7-weeks investigating and solving a crime in an actual forensic laboratory. Analyze crime scene evidence from homicide, sexual assault and drug trafficking investigations under the mentorship of forensic experts. Lego Robotics Camp with Harrisburg University

What: In this camp, you will organize your own Robotic Manufacturing Company. Your company will have a designing, engineering, building and programming department. The LEGO robotics kit will provide us with the blueprints, sensors and parts that we need. You will design, engineer and wire the Lego robotic manufacturing arm. As the owner of the company, you will learn how to organize each department, set a vision, assign responsibility, appreciate finance and understand profitability.

What: coding camp consisting of two custom curriculum modules: Web Applications (focused on building web-based software with JavaScript, HTML and CSS) and Mobile Applications Development (with Apple's Swift). Camps include activities outside of just direct learning, including hosting inspirational women in technology as part of a speaker series. All camps conclude with “demo days” where scholars are able to share their final projects.

Video Design Camp with Harrisburg University (Philadelphia Campus)

What: This weeklong intensive program is an opportunity for high school students to share their enthusiasm for games with their peers and learn about the creative process of making video games. With no programming or previous coding experience required, students are introduced to the basics of games design, human-computer interaction, and prototyping. This camp is centered around learning the science behind what makes games fun instead of frustrating, teaching students how to craft digital experiences instead of write code. Applying these design principles to their own working prototypes, students gain firsthand experience with the games design process used in the industry. At the end of the week, students will present their games for family and friends and leave camp with their very own playable video game. This camp provides students with a useful skill set for future entrance into university programs focused on games design, interactive media, human-computer interaction, and purposeful games.

Live Streaming Camp with Harrisburg University (Philadelphia Campus) 

What: Ever wonder how much time and effort goes into the production of creating a livestream? Well here at Harrisburg University we are offering for the first time ever, a live-streaming camp. In this camp students will learn about the basics of live streaming. From the social media platforms that enabled it, to understanding the importance of the analytics behind it. Campers will also be taught how to use OBS Studio, one of the biggest well known live-streaming programs that many streamers use today to stream their content to the world. After attending this camp, students will be confident in using the skills they have learned at Harrisburg University towards potentially starting their own live streaming production in the future. Students will take home the equipment that was used during the camp for their continued use at home, included in the price of the camp.

WesGold Fellows Summer Internship Program

What: West Philadelphia Financial Services Institution (WPFSI) is a community based non-profit financial institution devoted to invigorating economic growth in West Philadelphia through three functions: (1) Real Estate Development, (2) Capital Lending & Brokerage services for small businesses and individuals, and (3) Financial Education. WPFSI is focused on providing neighborhoods with initiatives in financial education, community development and access to higher education for the youth. WPFSI provides instruction for the youth in Philadelphia through the WesGold Fellows Summer Internship. This is a paid eight (8) week internship for fifteen (15) rising juniors and seniors. The WesGold Fellows program is anchored around five key topics: Personal Development, Communication Skills, Personal Finance, College Planning and Career Development. The program is a unique opportunity unlike any other for the students chosen to participate. More than just a “job”, the students are given the tools necessary for success and the means to properly implement them. In this intensive eight weeks, the students receive college level instruction, network with business professionals, go on numerous trips, practice their public speaking and writing skills, and much more.

Drexel University High School Scholars Program

What: a highly selective program that allows high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors to register for college courses – on a space-available basis – at Drexel University’s University City Campus while completing high school. Applicants must demonstrate the responsibility and maturity expected of university students, and have the approval of their high school guidance counselor to participate. It is important to note that this is NOT a dual-enrollment program; the High School Scholars program does not offer high school credit through college courses. The High School Scholars Program provides a number of advantages to students: prepares students for the college environment, no tuition cost for courses taken through the High School Scholar Program and High School Scholars have the ability to earn credits toward a future degree at Drexel, or possibly transfer credits at other universities.

Camp College with the PA Association for College Admissions Counseling

What: an intensive three day/two night workshop on a college campus designed for 60 rising high school seniors and juniors. Paired with mentors, participants will learn about all aspects of the college search and application process, experience life in the residence halls, learn about financial aid, standardized test exams and have a lot of fun! What: supports 52 high school students who have just completed their sophomore year to come to Carleton for a one-week academic program in the summer. CLAE Scholars experience the benefits of a liberal arts college education through classes in science, art, social studies, and technology. Throughout the week, CLAE Scholars will focus on African American community and identity through the framework of a liberal arts education.
